CYCLE WISE: A Coming of Age Course For Girls 10 - 13

Do you want to be able to talk more openly and comfortably with your daughter about puberty?

Do you want your daughter to get empowering, awe-inspiring, and feminist-based education about her body, emotions, and relationships?

Are you looking for something more than the standard sex ed class for your daughter?

Do you want to change the conversation around periods and puberty from ICK to AWESOME?

I created Cycle Wise: A Coming of Age Course for Girls for all of these reasons, and many more. Girls deserve reverent, imaginative, artistic, and accurate education around their cycles, hormones, periods, and fertility. Mainstream sex education leaves much to be desired: the spiritual and emotional changes of puberty, relationship to others and self, body image & media, and the reproductive system beyond sperm and eggs, pads and tampons.

This course is based on feminist and body/sexuality-positive values. It upholds the female reproductive system as a center of wonder, pleasure, goodness, vitality, and health; it validates emotion, intuition, and listening; it allows for community and co-creation; and it provides full-spectrum menstrual cycle education, from anatomy and physiology to magical menstrual myths and symbology, menstrual product options to global and historical perspectives on periods.

GIRLS SAY:

"I want to tell other girls that this is a very fun class and the teacher is amazing. I would say that it could feel a little strange at first but that they would get used to it. And also that it is a very helpful class and you learn a lot"

"Cycle Wise is a welcoming, enjoyable class that every girl NEEDS to attend. I learned so much!"

"I've been to many different puberty classes but never learned as much as I did in Cycle Wise. You are such a joyful and kind person that I can't help but smile when I step into our circle. I hope I can attend more of your classes soon!"

PARENTS SAY:

"The bright and positive energy of the instructor has had the most impact on my daughter. In this class the natural ways are respected and it's such a great positive influence"

"This course has provided a wonderful jumping-off point for my daughter and I's communication, making the topic of puberty more comfortable for us both"

"Fantastic course - this was perfect for my 6th grade daughter - providing knowledge at a critical point. A group setting among friends and peers, facilitated by a wonderful teacher, has provided her with hours of discussion on topics of coming of age"

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My daughter doesn't like to talk about puberty. Will she enjoy this course?

Yes! Most girls are not open about discussing puberty when they come to Cycle Wise, and that is totally expected. As the class progresses, the girls become more open and comfortable talking about puberty and cycles. When girls have a safe and relaxed space to learn and talk about "awkward" "gross" or "weird" topics, they start to really let loose and enjoy themselves. Many giggles, honest questions, and great discussion are found in this class. I guarantee that your daughter will enjoy learning fascinating facts about female bodies and the menstrual cycle with other girls her age. (And chocolate. Did I mention we always eat chocolate?)

Do you teach anything about sex?

No. The closest we get is discussing fertilization and the process of sperm reaching the egg. We also talk about boys' puberty experience, such as wet dreams and spontaneous erections. I do talk about the clitoris and self pleasure (masturbation) so the girls know it's okay and normal.

Do you teach birth control options?

No. I may touch on hormonal birth control methods as a reason why some people choose to not have cycles, or as a way to manage difficult cycles, but I don't mention contraception any other time.

What if the students want to know about sex or porn?

While I don't lead the students to these topics, I do offer an anonymous Question Box for them to use any time. I answer questions with discernment and if something seems too advanced for the group, I offer to talk about it one on one at break or after class. Most questions I get are about periods, or occasionally, boys or masturbation.

Do you offer this class for teenagers?

Not yet, but soon! I have plans to offer Cycle Wise II: Holistic Sex Ed For Teens sometime in 2018.

How do I enroll my daughter?

I have a new group forming every few months. Contact me to see when the next course will be. If you already have a group of interested families, download the info sheet: Gathering A Group For Cycle Wise

About Language:

On this site you'll find a mix of terms referring to "women" or "cycling people." My decision to use mixed language reflects my intention to include everyone who experiences cycles while acknowledging the reproductive realities ad experiences of cisgender women.
